OBC amendment bill introduced in Lok Sabha with the support of opposition, now state governments will get this right

On Monday i.e. today the Constitution Amendment Bill has been passed by the Central Government in the Lok Sabha. Under this bill, the states will also get the right to prepare the OBC list. 15 opposition parties including Congress have supported this bill to be introduced by the government. On Monday, before the start of the proceedings of the House, the opposition parties held a joint meeting, in which it was decided to support the bill.

The Constitution (Scheduled Tribes) Order (Amendment) Bill, 2021 has been passed by Lok Sabha. Thereafter, the proceedings of the House were adjourned till 2 pm.

Earlier, 15 major opposition parties, including the Congress, met on Monday as the monsoon session of Parliament reached the end and discussed the strategy ahead and decided that they would discuss the amendment bill related to Other Backward Classes (OBC). Will participate and give full support to get it passed.

‘We will all support this amendment bill’

After the meeting, Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge had said, “We will all support this amendment bill. Our demand is that this bill should be introduced and discussed and passed at the same time. We will fully support it.”

Former Congress President Rahul Gandhi, Kharge, Congress leader in Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, senior party leaders Anand Sharma and Jairam Ramesh, senior Samajwadi Party leader Ram Gopal Yadav, DMK’s leader in Lok Sabha, in the meeting held in Kharge’s Parliament House. Leader TR Baalu, Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut and leaders of several other parties were present.

Supreme Court made this comment

Significantly, the Supreme Court had said in one of its observations that only the Center has the right to prepare the OBC list, which was opposed by the central and state governments. Now the Constitution Amendment Bill is being introduced by the Central Government on this issue, after which the states will also have the right to prepare the OBC list.

After the passage of the Constitution (Scheduled Tribes) Order (Amendment) Bill, 2021, states will have the right to notify castes in the OBC list at their own discretion. Maratha community in Maharashtra, Jat community in Haryana, Patel community in Gujarat and Lingayat community in Karnataka may get a chance to join the OBC category. These castes have been demanding reservation for a long time. Out of these, the Maharashtra Devendra Fadnavis government had given reservation to the Maratha community, but it was rejected by the Supreme Court in its decision on May 5.

There is a deadlock in both the houses of the Parliament

Let us tell you that there has been a deadlock in both the houses of Parliament for the last several days over Pegasus and some other issues. Monsoon session started from 19th July. But, till now the proceedings of both the houses have been disrupted. The session is to conclude on August 13.
